Sorry don't answer that

Why isn’t it hot
to wear socks half up your calves
without any pants?

creeping opening

a slow dawning
like the awareness that it’s raining outside
and it has been for a while
noticing that you’ve been hearing
the gutter drain just out the window
for you’re not sure how long
and it’s lulled you into
a sleepy passivity
how many things are like that?
wear at the edge of consciousness
until they're just
the way it’s always been

This morning I went walking through fall sunshine, wind, and golden leaves raining down, pushing a stroller containing a sleeping toddler, for nearly two hours. The weather was crisp but warm, the light radiating off the falling leaves and sometimes even swirling into the stroller but completely failing to make the sleepy toddler even stir. The streets were quiet on a Monday midday, the only sound the wind in the stiffening papery leaves.

Walk walk walk
hush hush hush
step step step
shhh, shh, sshhh

Ode to Fall in Seattle--Guest post!

Heater stopped by as I was sitting down to compose my daily, and started offering suggestions, so I made her write a poem of her own.

Our warm grey blanket
Shrouding us with damp protection
Then dim light
Breaking through the clouds
Slanting through the trees
Orange, red, soggy flames
Grinding into rich hummus under my feet
As I plod home in the dark

Things that go bump in the night

His head on my bladder
his foot on my ribs
his knee in my side
my head on the headboard
my toe on the doorjamb
my butt on the toilet seat

Ack, I missed my first day yesterday! Just completely forgot. I was sick so I lay in bed all day and read books--I totally had lots of time, but my head was foggy...

Still sniffly. But today was better than yesterday. And I *still* almost forgot. Time does funny things when you have too much of it!

Pelvic decorations

If you wear socks you can sneak better when there are parties at your house

When the second wave of revelers
enters the kitchen—
when you’ve just said goodbye to the last set,
yawning, mellow folk—
when more friends mosey in
and seamlessly take over the entertaining—
there are two choices.
You can stay up and start a whole new round
of conversation,
finding out about new jobs and
chewing over relationship choices and
making another round of drinks,
or you can creep quietly upstairs
without even saying goodnight
and look at your computer,
peaceful,
 while they laugh downstairs.
(They won’t even notice you’re gone.)
